Connecticut — State #3: Mystic Memories & New England Road Trips

A Little Closer to Home

Some of our travel memories began close to home. During our New Jersey years, Connecticut was part of the nearby tri-state region we could explore by car. It now becomes State #3 in our 50 States Journey—a chapter about friendship, a stroll through Mystic, and the New England trips we still remember.

A Connecticut Visit with Friends

We visited Connecticut with our friend Emma, whose coworker lived and worked there. That connection gave us a reason to go, and we had the opportunity to stroll around Mystic’s seaport area and nearby neighborhood. It was a simple visit, made special by the company and the chance to explore somewhere together.

I don’t have a collection of photographs from that Connecticut outing to share. What remains is the memory of being there with friends. As I gather our state stories, I’m learning to appreciate those quieter visits too. They belong to our journey just as much as the trips we documented in hundreds of pictures.

The Little Things We Remember

An old Facebook post brought back one wonderfully ordinary detail: the juicy hotdogs we brought along! In February 2015, I was already reminiscing with friends about our earlier Connecticut visit. The post doesn’t tell me the trip’s exact date, but it preserves something more personal than an itinerary—the food we packed and the people we shared it with.

Sometimes that is what stays with us. Years later, a small detail can bring an entire outing back into conversation.

Our New England Road-Trip Years

While New Jersey was home, we also enjoyed traveling to Massachusetts and Vermont, often during fall. Those drives and outings became part of our family’s Northeast chapter, before our move to Texas. Our archive still holds photographs from an October 2011 Vermont trip, including Killington, as well as Boston memories from other visits.

Connecticut can be part of the drive from New Jersey toward Boston and other New England destinations. The route to Vermont depends on where you’re going and the roads you choose. I no longer have a route record for those particular trips, so I remember them here as our wider road-trip tradition rather than assigning a Connecticut crossing to a specific photograph.

The Vermont photographs shared here are from that family archive, not from our Mystic visit. They bring back the season of life when the children were younger and another drive together meant another opportunity to make memories.

Plan Your Own Mystic Visit

If our little memory inspires a Connecticut outing of your own, Mystic is a lovely place to begin your research. Its waterfront downtown, shops, and maritime attractions offer several ways to spend a day. These are planning suggestions for today’s visitors; our personal recollection is of strolling through the seaport area and neighborhood.

Downtown Mystic: Make time for a walk around the riverfront and local shops. The downtown drawbridge is one of the area’s recognizable features. Read the official Connecticut tourism guide to Mystic before planning your stops.

Mystic Seaport Museum: For a fuller maritime-history outing, research the museum’s historic vessels, shipyard, and recreated 19th-century seaport village. Plan a separate museum visit if you would like to explore beyond downtown, and check current ticket information before you go.

Mystic Aquarium: Another family option to research, particularly if you want to build a longer visit around marine life. Check the official aquarium website for current tickets and visitor information.

These are booking resources, not tours our family claims to have taken. Compare the operator, inclusions, cancellation terms, accessibility, and official attraction prices before booking. Check current seasonal schedules and allow time for parking and traffic. Mystic is in southeastern Connecticut, so confirm how it fits your route rather than assuming it is on every drive to Boston or Vermont.

Another Footprint Worth Keeping

Connecticut reminds me that a travel story can begin with a friend, a nearby destination, and a little time to look around. Not every outing left us with a photo album, but each became part of the life we shared.

Thank You, Lord, for friendships, family time, and the opportunities to explore Your creation. May we keep noticing the blessings in both the big adventures and the simple days.
