While New Jersey was home, Washington, D.C. became one of the places our family returned to year after year. Our annual cherry blossom trips brought us back each spring, and museum visits gave us more reasons to explore together. These photographs hold several chapters of that family tradition.
Washington, D.C. is the nation’s capital and a federal district. It has its own place in our city adventures, alongside the state stories in our 50 States Journey.
Spring Returns with Cherry Blossoms
There was something special about seeing the capital in bloom. We walked beside the water, stopped beneath flowering trees, and took the family photographs that now remind us how quickly the children grew. The blossoms were beautiful, but the time together was what made us want to return.
Our spring photographs include a visit on April 2, 2017: flowering branches beside the Tidal Basin, green lawns, a family afternoon outdoors, and a view of the Washington Monument reaching into the sky.
Looking through our Facebook memories brings us back to earlier visits, too. On April 11, 2015, I wrote, “The family that Cherry-ish together Blossoms together.” It was a playful little caption, but it still captures why these spring outings mattered to us: watching the flowers bloom and our children grow, together.
Museum Days & Curious Minds
Our Washington trips also included Smithsonian museums. They gave us opportunities to learn, look closely, and discover something beyond an ordinary school day. The museum photographs in this collection include aircraft and other exhibits from an August 2018 outing—another chapter of the visits we made from our New Jersey home.
Madame Tussauds & Playful Family Photos
We also visited Madame Tussauds, where posing beside wax figures became its own family adventure. From presidential displays to entertainment and sports scenes, everyone found a pose worth trying. These are wax museum photographs, and the fun was in stepping into the exhibits together.
Looking back, the pictures make us smile for more than the famous faces. They capture our children at different ages, Mark joining in, and the little moments of laughter that made an outing memorable.
A Tradition We Still Cherish
Washington, D.C. is part of the wider story of our New Jersey years: a place we could revisit as a family, with blossoms, museums, and familiar traditions waiting for us. We often ended our D.C. outings with seafood from Captain White Seafood City—another memory we shared in our New Jersey story.

Plan Your Own Washington, D.C. Footprints
For a blossom-season visit, start with the National Park Service bloom updates. The timing changes with the weather, so check the current forecast rather than relying on the dates of our family photos.
The Smithsonian’s D.C.-area museums are free to visit, but some require free timed-entry passes. Use the Smithsonian visitor guide to choose your museums and confirm entry arrangements before going.
