Japan: A Journey Through Culture, Flavor & Family
Our Japan Adventure
Japan had been on our family travel list for a long time, and finally experiencing it together was something truly special. From the energy and flavors of Osaka, to the charm of Fukuoka, the unforgettable sights of Tokyo, and the beauty and traditions of Kyoto, every stop gave us a different glimpse of Japan.
But this journey became about so much more than the places we visited. It was about experiencing a new culture together, tasting incredible food, dressing in traditional kimono, walking through ancient temples and shrines, and creating memories that we’ll carry with us long after the trip ended.
Japan gave us so many beautiful footprints to remember. ❤️
🍜 Osaka — Our First Taste of Japan
Osaka welcomed us to Japan with bright lights, busy streets, incredible food, and an energy that immediately made us excited to explore. It was the perfect introduction to a country we had been looking forward to experiencing together.
One of our favorite places was Dotonbori, where colorful signs, restaurants, shops, and crowds filled the streets. And of course, we couldn’t leave without taking our photo with the famous Glico Running Man — one of those classic Osaka moments we just had to capture! 📸
And then there was the food! 😋 Japan is a destination where exploring and eating seem to go hand in hand. Every meal became part of the adventure, from discovering local dishes to simply enjoying the experience of eating together in a completely different place.
Osaka was lively, delicious, and unforgettable — the perfect beginning to our Japan journey. 🇯🇵❤️
⭐ Fukuoka — A Kirby Dream Come True
One of the sweetest stops on our Japan adventure took us to Fukuoka, where we made our way to Kirby Café in Hakata.
For Adriel, this wasn't just another café. Kirby has been one of his favorite characters since he was little, so getting to experience Kirby Café together felt like bringing a childhood memory to life. ❤️
From the adorable themed dishes to all the little Kirby details around us, everything was creative, playful, and almost too cute to eat! Of course, we still ate it. 😂
Sometimes the most memorable travel experiences aren't the famous landmarks. They're the places that mean something personally to someone you love. Seeing Adriel enjoy something that had been part of his childhood made this stop especially meaningful for us.
A little pink Kirby, a very happy son, and another family memory tucked into our footprints through Japan. ⭐❤️
🗼 Tokyo — One Day, So Much to See
Tokyo was one of those places where we wanted to squeeze as much as possible into the time we had—and somehow, we managed to experience so much in just one day!
From the famous Shibuya Crossing and the incredible views from Shibuya Sky, to seeing Tokyo Tower, exploring the Nintendo Store, and enjoying another delicious bowl of ramen, the city seemed to have something exciting waiting around every corner.
One of the unexpected highlights was catching a view of Mount Fuji in the distance. Seeing such an iconic symbol of Japan, even from afar, made the day feel even more special. 🗻
Tokyo was fast, colorful, modern, and full of energy—a completely different side of Japan from what we experienced elsewhere.
One day definitely wasn't enough…but it gave us plenty of reasons to come back. ❤️
👘 Kyoto — Stepping Into Tradition
After the bright lights and fast pace of Tokyo, Kyoto gave us a completely different side of Japan—one filled with history, tradition, beautiful temples, and moments that made us feel as though we had stepped back in time.
One of the experiences I had been looking forward to most was wearing a traditional kimono while exploring Kyoto. We chose our kimonos, had them carefully fitted, and then made our way through the historic streets toward Kiyomizu-dera.
Walking together in our kimonos, surrounded by traditional architecture and the beauty of Kyoto, made the experience feel even more special. Of course, we took plenty of photos 😂, but beyond the pictures, I loved having the opportunity to experience even a small part of Japan's rich cultural traditions together as a family.
Standing at Kiyomizu-dera and looking out over Kyoto was one of those travel moments when you simply stop, look around, and think—
We are really here. ❤️
⛩️ Fushimi Inari — Through the Torii Gates
Another unforgettable part of our Kyoto adventure was visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for the seemingly endless rows of vibrant torii gates that wind their way up Mount Inari.
Walking beneath those gates was an experience all its own. With every step, the busy city seemed farther away as the path continued higher into the mountain. We walked, climbed, stopped for photos, caught our breath 😂, and kept going.
For Jael, Mount Inari became one of her favorite experiences in Kyoto. And I could understand why. There was something special about being surrounded by the torii gates, trees, shrines, and quiet pathways while making our way farther up the mountain.
Travel has a way of reminding us that sometimes the most memorable part isn't simply arriving at a destination—it's the journey we take to get there.
One step, one gate, one footprint at a time. ⛩️👣❤️
👣 A Footprint to Remember
Japan gave us so much more than a collection of beautiful places.
We experienced the excitement of Osaka, made a childhood wish come alive at Kirby Café, squeezed an incredible amount of adventure into one unforgettable day in Tokyo, and stepped into the beauty and traditions of Kyoto.
But when I look back at our photos, what I treasure most isn't simply where we went. It's who I experienced it with.
The meals we shared, the streets we wandered, the laughter between destinations, the excitement on our children's faces, and even the tired feet at the end of long days 😂—those are the moments that turned a trip to Japan into a family memory.
Every destination leaves something behind in us. Japan left us with a deeper appreciation for its culture, traditions, flavors, and people—and another reminder of how blessed we are to experience this beautiful world together.
We arrived as travelers. We left carrying memories that will stay with us long after our footprints faded. 🇯🇵❤️
And somewhere along the way, Japan became one of those places we'd happily return to someday. 👣
✈️ Planning Your Own Japan Adventure?
Our Japan journey gave us plenty of memories—and quite a few lessons along the way. If you're planning a trip of your own, here are some things we learned, packed, and actually found useful during our adventure.
💭 What We Learned Along the Way
Five days in Japan taught us that you can experience an incredible amount in a short time—but it also reminded us that sometimes the best travel plans need a little breathing room. 😂 Here are a few things we learned from our adventure:
✓🚉 Stay close to a transportation hub.
One thing that made a huge difference for us was choosing accommodations close to a train or bus station. When you're moving between cities and trying to fit a lot into each day, those extra minutes spent walking to and from transportation really add up—especially when you're carrying luggage. Staying near a major transportation hub made getting around much easier and helped us make better use of our limited time.
✓🌧️ Always keep a lightweight rain poncho handy.
Japan's weather can change quickly, and rain can easily become part of the adventure. We learned that carrying a small disposable or packable rain poncho in our day bag is worth the tiny amount of space it takes. They're inexpensive, lightweight, and much easier than scrambling to find rain gear when you're already out exploring.
✓🚄 Japan's transportation makes ambitious itineraries possible.
We traveled through Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Kyoto in just five days. Japan's transportation system made that possible, but understanding routes, stations, and timing ahead of time definitely helps when every hour counts.
✓👟 Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
Japan was a walking trip! Between city streets, train stations, temples, shopping districts, Kiyomizu-dera, and those seemingly endless torii gates at Fushimi Inari, we definitely put our shoes to work.
✓🎟️ Reserve special experiences early.
Some experiences are worth planning around. Our Kirby Café visit was especially meaningful because it was something Adriel had wanted to experience for years. For popular attractions, cafés, and observation decks, advance reservations can make the difference between “we made it!” and “maybe next time.” 😂
✓🗺️ Don't underestimate travel time between cities.
A train may be fast, but getting to the station, finding the correct platform, navigating a huge station, and getting from the arrival station to your destination all take time. Build that into the itinerary.
✓🧳 Pack light when you're moving around.
When several cities are packed into one trip, every piece of luggage travels with you. Keeping things organized and manageable makes those train transfers much easier.
✓🍜 Leave room for unplanned discoveries.
Some of our favorite moments weren't necessarily the biggest attractions. Wandering through neighborhoods, trying street food, finding ramen, shopping, and simply experiencing everyday Japan became part of the adventure too.
✓❤️ And perhaps our biggest lesson: you don't have to see everything.
Five days gave us an incredible introduction to Japan, but it also gave us plenty of reasons to return. Sometimes leaving a destination with things still on your list isn't a failure of the itinerary.
It's an invitation to come back!

✓ Disposable Travel Rain Ponchos
We kept these in our day bags because they took almost no room and were handy when the weather changed.
During our time in Japan, it really did rain on several days, sometimes for a few hours at a time. Thankfully, we had packed lightweight disposable ponchos before the trip, and they definitely came in handy while we continued exploring.
Jael preferred using an umbrella, so she ended up buying a beautiful one while we were in Japan. That umbrella even made its way into some of our travel photos—including one taken during one of our temple visits. ☔

✓ Portable Power Bank
With so much phone use while traveling—photos, videos, maps, tickets, and navigation—a power bank is one of the travel essentials we rarely leave behind. Over the years, we've used several different brands and sizes depending on the trip and how much power we expect to need. These two, in particular, have served us well and have become reliable travel companions on many of our adventures.
✓ Anker Power Bank — 10,000mAh Portable Charger
We love this Anker power bank for its simple, compact and dependable design. With 10,000mAh capacity, it gives us extra power for our phones during long sightseeing and travel days without taking up too much room in our bag.

✓ INIU 10,000mAh 45W Fast-Charging Power Bank
We also love this INIU power bank, especially for its 45W fast charging and built-in USB-C cable. The attached cable means one less cord to dig for in our bag, making it especially convenient when we're constantly on the move.

✓ Selfie Stick
One of our favorite little travel companions! It makes it easier to capture family photos and videos without always having to ask someone else to take the picture. 📸
✓ Charging Cables & Wall Chargers
Over the years, we've gone through our share of charging cables and wall plugs. Some were lost during travel, some eventually stopped working, and others simply became outdated as our phones and devices changed from USB-A to USB-C.
One thing we've learned is to travel with more than one cable—and in different lengths. A 6-foot cable is especially useful in hotels when the outlet isn't conveniently located beside the bed, while a shorter cable works perfectly with a portable power bank when we're walking around sightseeing.
We also like wall chargers with multiple ports because our family usually has several devices that need charging at the end of the day. One charger that can handle multiple devices means fewer adapters to pack.
✓🔌 6-Foot Lightning Cables — Different Brands We've Used
We've purchased several brands of charging cables over the years. Some lasted longer than others, some disappeared somewhere along our travels 😂, but we've learned that having a few extra 6-foot cables in our luggage is always useful.

✓🔌 10-Foot Lightning Charging Cables
Extra-long cables have come in handy more times than we expected, especially in hotel rooms where the nearest outlet seems to be on the other side of the room! The extra reach gives us much more flexibility while charging.

✓🔌 Dual-Port USB-C + USB-A Wall Chargers
We started using these as our devices transitioned from traditional USB-A to USB-C. Having both ports in one small charger is convenient when we're traveling with a mix of older and newer cables.

✓🔌 40W Multi-Port USB-C Wall Charger
One of our favorite features is having multiple charging ports in a single compact plug. It's especially useful when several phones or devices need charging at the same time—and it means fewer individual chargers to pack.
