Maui: A Family Adventure in Paradise

There are places you visit that are beautiful in photographs—and then there are places that somehow feel even more beautiful once you're actually standing there. Maui was one of those places for us.

Our Hawaii adventure was a little bit of island hopping—four days in Maui followed by three days in Oʻahu. With only four days to explore Maui, we wanted to make every day count.

And we certainly did. ❤️

From driving the legendary Road to Hana on our own and discovering beautiful beaches and dramatic coastlines, to standing above the clouds at Haleakalā and experiencing an unforgettable Hawaiian cultural evening, Maui gave us the perfect combination of adventure, beauty, learning, and family time.

But as with so many of our travels, what I remember most isn't simply the scenery. It's experiencing it together—the excitement of discovering somewhere new, the unexpected moments, the laughter, and the memories we brought home with us.

Four days. One beautiful island. So many memories. 🌺

Another adventure. Another faithful footprint our family will always remember. 👣❤️

🚙 Road to Hana — Our DIY Adventure

One of the best decisions we made during our four days in Maui was experiencing the famous Road to Hana on our own.

Instead of booking an organized tour, we decided to drive ourselves. At the time, we downloaded an app called GyPSy Guide for about $12, which essentially became our personal tour guide in the car. As we drove, the app guided us along the route, pointed out key stops, and shared interesting stories and historical background about the places we were seeing.

We thought it was pretty cool! 😄

More importantly, exploring this way gave our family the freedom to experience the Road to Hana at our own pace. If something caught our attention, we could stop. If we wanted more time somewhere, we stayed. We could take photos, enjoy the scenery, and continue whenever we were ready.

And as a family of four, doing it ourselves saved us money compared with purchasing four tickets for an organized Road to Hana tour.

Looking back, I'm so glad we chose the DIY experience. The Road to Hana wasn't simply about reaching Hana—it was about all the beautiful places and unexpected discoveries we encountered along the way.

Sometimes the road really is the destination. 🌴🚙👣

🌿 Rainforests, Waterfalls & A Leap of Courage

The Road to Hana is so much more than a scenic drive. Along the way, we hiked, connected with nature, and experienced Maui's beautiful tropical rainforest.

And the waterfalls! 💦

I remember hearing Gordon Ramsay say that it seemed like there were waterfalls around every corner in Hana—and once we were there, we understood what he meant. 😂

We stopped at two waterfalls, including Puaʻa Kaʻa Falls, and that's where one of my favorite memories from the day happened.

Adriel and Jael decided to go cliff jumping.

For Jael, though, it wasn't quite as simple as jumping into the water. She had to overcome her fear first.

I remember watching her gather the courage to do it—and then...

she jumped! ❤️

I was one proud mom.

Adriel took the leap too, and luckily, we captured both of their jumps on video. Looking back at those videos brings us right back to that moment—the waterfall, the excitement, the nerves, and finally the jump.

At the end of the day, when we asked them about their favorite experience, there was no question:

The waterfalls won. 💦❤️

Sometimes travel gives our children more than beautiful places to see. Sometimes it gives them an opportunity to try something new, push past a fear, and discover that they're capable of more than they thought.

One waterfall. One brave leap. One family memory we'll never forget. 🌴💦👣

🖤 Maui's Black Sand Beach

Another memorable stop during our Maui adventure was experiencing one of the island's beautiful black sand beaches.

It was such a striking contrast—the dark volcanic sand against the blue ocean, surrounded by Maui's lush landscape and rugged coastline. It looked and felt completely different from the beaches we were accustomed to seeing.

That's one of the things I loved most about exploring Maui. Within the same island, the scenery seemed to constantly change—from tropical rainforests and waterfalls to winding coastal roads, volcanic landscapes, and beautiful beaches.

Every stop seemed to show us another side of Maui.

Black sand, blue ocean, and another beautiful footprint along the way. 🖤🌊👣

🌋 Haleakalā — Standing Above the Clouds

No, we weren't on an airplane. 😂

We were actually standing on the ground above the clouds, at more than 10,000 feet above sea level at the summit of Haleakalā.

Of all the places we experienced during our Maui adventure, this was my personal favorite.

The drive to the summit was an experience all by itself. As we climbed higher and higher, the landscape began to change until eventually we found ourselves looking down at the clouds below us. It was almost surreal.

Haleakalā also gave us an opportunity to learn more about Hawaii's fascinating volcanic history. I love those moments when travel becomes more than simply seeing something beautiful—when we're also learning about the place we're standing in and understanding a little more about how it came to be.

At 10,023 feet above sea level, surrounded by an incredible volcanic landscape and clouds stretching below us, I remember thinking how extraordinary it was that our Maui adventure had brought us all the way up here.

Some footprints are left on beaches. This one was left above the clouds. ☁️🌋👣❤️

🌴 Lahaina — Beauty Along the Coast

As we continued exploring Maui, one place that immediately caught our attention was Lahaina.

I remember posting on Facebook:

“I spy with my two eyes something in the mountain... L stands for Lahaina.” 😂

It was one of those little discoveries that made the drive itself part of the adventure.

We truly enjoyed the beautiful scenery around Lahaina—the mountains, beaches, ocean views, and coastline made even an ordinary drive feel special.

That's something Maui taught us over and over again: you didn't always need to be heading toward a major attraction to experience something beautiful. Sometimes all you had to do was look out the window.

Another scenic drive. Another beautiful Maui memory. 🌴🌊👣❤️

🔥 Our Luau — An Evening to Remember

Before our trip, we kept hearing the same thing from people who had visited Hawaii:

“You can't go to Hawaii without experiencing a luau!”

After experiencing one ourselves, we understood why. ❤️

Our evening included dinner, music, dancing, storytelling, and an incredible Polynesian fire performance. But what made the experience especially meaningful was learning more about Hawaiian and Polynesian culture and traditions through the stories and performances.

And then came a moment we definitely hadn't planned. 😂

During the evening, guests were invited to come to the front and learn some hula dance movements. Jael was interested—but she was too shy to go up by herself.

She looked at me and basically made me a deal:

She would go...if Mom went too.

So guess who ended up learning hula in front of everyone? 😂💃🌺

Both of us!

What started as me simply encouraging my daughter turned into one of my favorite memories from the evening. We laughed, tried to follow along, and enjoyed the moment together while Mark and Adriel watched.

The fire dancing was spectacular. The dinner was wonderful. The cultural experience was memorable.

But years later, one of the things I remember most is something much simpler:

My daughter didn't want to go up there alone—so we danced together. ❤️

Those are the moments travel gives us that no itinerary can really plan.

👣 A Footprint to Remember

Four days in Maui went by much too quickly, but somehow we packed so many memories into those four days.

We drove the winding Road to Hana, hiked through tropical rainforests, watched Adriel and Jael take a brave leap into the waterfalls, walked along black sand, enjoyed Maui's beautiful coastline, and stood above the clouds at Haleakalā.

We explored on our own, changed plans when we needed to, learned about Hawaiian culture, laughed together, and even found ourselves dancing hula at a luau. 😂🌺

Looking back, I don't remember Maui simply as a collection of places we visited. I remember how we experienced them together.

That's one of the reasons I love traveling with my family. The destination may bring us there, but it's the little moments along the way—the unexpected stops, the laughter, the courage to try something new, and the stories we still tell years later—that become the real souvenirs.

Four days. One island. Countless memories.

Maui left a beautiful footprint on our family's journey. 🌺👣❤️

After four unforgettable days in Maui, it was time to hop on a plane and continue our adventure on the second island of our trip—Oʻahu.

And here's the surprising part: if I remember correctly, our inter-island flight was only around $50 per person at the time! That made our decision to split one week between two islands even sweeter.

Maui was complete. Waikiki was waiting. 🌊🌺
